Can Load Notices be installed on damaged racks
Pallet racking is always designed based on the load that needs to be stored. When a rack is damaged, it’s structural integrity is compromised. The load carrying capacity is therefore affected. Unfortunately, with damaged rack, the exact load capacity, cannot be calculated and therefore, it would be unwise to install Load Notices/Plaques on damaged racking.
How often should pallet racks be inspected.
A 3-tier system for pallet racking inspection is recommended
Step 1: Damage reporting by warehouse personnel as soon as the damage occurs or is seen.
Step 2: Inspection by internal trained personnel on a weekly or monthly basis.
Step 3: Inspection by an external, trained, experienced, independent racking inspector
Do pallet racks need to be anchored.
All pallet racking must be anchored. In the case of handloaded systems, whose top shelf is 8ft or less from the walking-working surface, the requirement to anchor can be waived if approved by a registered design engineer
Can frame bracing be straightened
Straightening of frame bracing is only acceptable if approved by the supervising engineer. A repair solution that requires bending or straightening damaged components, requires the straightening process to be conducted in a manner that ensures that the appropriate load carrying properties of the steel, including the effects of residual stresses, are maintained in the repaired member.
Should damaged pallet racking components be repaired or replaced
The ideal situation requires replacement of components, Like-for-Like with the OEM’s components. In some instances, where this is not possible, a repair solution may be possible. Repairs can be done once designed and approved by a registered design engineer. Certified Rack Repair kits are available which may also be used to perform repairs. Their suitability is determined on a case-by-case basis.
I want to make sure my racks are stable. Is it ok to attach the pallet racking to the walls or roof?
To verify stability of racking, contact your supplier or a registered rack engineer. You should never simply attach the racks to the building. Racks and buildings will exert forces on each other, and calculations need to be done to determine the effect of these forces. A Rack Engineer or the supplier would be able to advise on the best course for stabilizing the racks where required.
My boss says that Racking is like “Mechano” so I can go out and simply buy some parts, put them together and start storing items.
There is definitely more to pallet racking than that. It is not a straightforward as building “Mechano”. Pallet racking is primarily designed based on the weight and dimensions of the items to be stored, with different components having different capacities. The components need to be appropriate for the loads being stored and therefore the correct model of frame and beam is required to ensure that the system is safe. It is important to consult with someone who is knowledgeable in the design of racking systems, who will design and specify the correct racking system for your needs
Can I adjust the beam heights in my pallet racking system. I have new products that I would like to store
Check with the supplier or manufacturer before adjusting the beam heights. Changing the beam heights affects the load carrying capacity of the frames. Before adjusting the beam heights you need to ensure that the frames will be able to carry the required loads.
